Guess what. I just watched Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles! (That's a long story for another time) Now. I know its been months since the release of that turkey, and I also know a lot of things have been said about that film. What I do know is that 1% hate it, the rest, absolutely loved it. And that's not good. Because we all know I'm not a big fan of Harmony Gold ever since I realized they're just a bunch of Macross and New Generation fans.
(and they're definitely not a fan of you -ed)
So, to make sure my opinion doesn't get lost in the sea of other wannabe Robotech experts, I have enlisted the help of two well-known and well-loved Robotech characters spawned from the mind of the Creative Director himself!
I present to you:

Guest Starring: Joe, the casual anime fan
Zombie Alex: Hey there Robotech world! The name's Alex - Alex Romero! And my co-host...
Zombie Daryl: dddduuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhmmmm
Zombie Alex: *Ehehe* You'll have to excuse him... He's not very talkative. (They call him Daryl, but I think he prefers Mark).
Zombie Daryl: *Grunts*
Zombie Alex: He's not paid enough to talk I think. Anyway, we've got Joe here - who's an expert at just about nothing Robotech! He's just seen the show 20 years ago, and has watched other anime shows like Ghost in the Shell, but not Gundam!
Joe: Hi.
THE SHOW PROPER BEGINS
Zombie Alex: So the MapMaestro just watched the new Robotech movie, eh..? Hey! That's great! Isn't it great Mark?
Zombie Daryl: *Grunts*
Joe: I thought the film was confusing. Like most anime.
Zombie Alex: Well, Joe, hate to disappoint ya', but Robotech's not anime. And the dialogue's pretty dumbed down anyway that even a five year old would laugh at all my hilariously off-color jokes!
Zombie Daryl: Deeeeaaad man not funny.
Zombie Alex: Oh shut up. You're dead too, smartass! And my jokes were funny! That's why my death was so cool and heroic and for the most part - NECESSARY!
Joe: Your death was contrived, useless, and did not serve the story at all. Not a single tear was shed when you blew yourself up. Now, when Guld of Macross Plus died, that, was a heroic death.
Zombie Daryl: Wannnaaabeee Roy Fokker...
Zombie Alex: Shut up Shut up Lalalalalala I can't hear you! I thought you didn't watch a lot of anime, Joe?!
Joe: I watch only a few choice anime and live action sci-fi shows, as is natural for a casual Robotech fan wanting more from Harmony Gold, but can't get any.
Zombie Alex: OOOKAAAY! I get it. Moving on. I think the film is cool! I love it! We waited 20 years for it and now it's hear.
Joe: If I waited 20 years for a mediocre product, I would've settled for that Robotech 3000 thing I heard from a friend years ago.
Zombie Alex: You know what, Joe? You're lame. Lame, lame, lame! The story was a full story, it rewrote stuff from the show, but its all good! I call anyone who nitpicks CONTINUITY PORNOGRAPHERS! They don't deserve to be Robotech fans.
Joe: I am in agreement with nitpicking too much about a show's canon, but setting is as official is selfish, and narrowminded. But that is a different topic. The show's story telling felt amateurish at times. The drama between the newer characters was hardly compelling fiction. Hardly enough to hold one's interest for too long, unless you happen to be a fan of this... Tommy Yune.
Zombie Daryl: *Grunts*
Zombie Alex: You mean The Yune? Oh yeah! Definitely. I even made a website devoted to him. IheartTommy.com. How about the look? Man, I looked so sweeeeeeet! And all the characters look super detailed and the CG was fantastic!
Joe: This is the reality of anime, but after four years in development hell, you still wonder if this is truly it. The CG is passable to bad. The scene with the Haydonite trying to kidnap the android girl JANICE looked horribly unsatisfying. Laughable even, the models are uninteresting, undetailed, and so blah. I've had more fun listening to Internet talk shows.
Zombie Alex: You're mean. You know that?
Joe: I'm just an outsider just trying to understand the franchise I grew up with. I'm very disappointed with what I see so far. Speaking of seeing, the film's color palette is simply different shades of blue and greys. (With some reds thrown in for the bad guys, how original) Why did the artists limit themselves to that? Look at Ghost in the Shell. According to John Krisfalcusi, creator of Ren & Stimpy, American artists always limit themselves to one color palette (link: http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/2006/10/color-theory-steal-from-anime-if-you.html#links). Perhaps Tommy Yune is in the American mentality of coloring. Not good. Blues and Black get boring.
Zombie Alex: You're not just some casual fan... are you? Finally, what did you think of my... heroic death?
Zombie Daryl: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zombie Alex: I have the last laugh, Mark, since I don't get killed the 15 minutes in the movie without getting some major screentime with my buddy Marcus!
Joe: As I said, you're death was unnecessary. And the scene following the Marcus being rescued by Maia and the vision, was awkward, and emotionally uninvolving. The vision seeing Marlene Rush was almost good, but then, it felt forced. These Harmony Gold boys really don't know how to handle drama at all.
Zombie Alex: Remind me why I invited you to my first show.
Joe: I would hate this show to become something like "ROBOTECH ROXXXXZZZORRSSSS LOLOLOL".
Zombie Alex: Good point.
And thus ends, the first episode of The Zombie Romero & Zombie Taylor Show!
Tune in next week for MedMapGuy's announcements! Also, be on the look out for the Robotech Live Action Novel, which I will be posting up an update on it in the near future! Toodleooooo! And don't forget to comment!
